We traveled to Wisconsin to take the “Splash of Red Cranberry Tour”

The trees were speckled with autumn hues of blazing red, yellow, and orange as we traveled along Wisconsin’s highway with the hope of experiencing nature’s top holiday show to learn how those ruby red cranberries make their way to our markets for the holidays.

In Pittsville, Wisconsin during the month of October, students take to the crimson-colored marshes surrounding the town to help harvest the state’s official fruit and even offer a tour, where they explain how the fruit gets from the farm to the supermarket.

Pittsville High School offers the only science course in the country dealing with cranberries, and as part of the curriculum, the teens act as guides to welcome visitors and escort them during a 2-1/2 hour tour of cranberry marshes, a laboratory facility, and a storage warehouse.  They even include a prepared lunch, which as expected featured a delicious Wisconsin cheese soup, sandwiches with cranberry trimmings, and student prepared sweet treats.
