Chicago, a large city in the Midwest section of the United States. is often referred to as “The Windy City.”  It’s rich in cultures, home to Museums, sculptures, parks, and well-known sports’ teams. But Chicago is also famous for its unique deep-dish pizza and a Chicago-style hot dog.

Our quest this summer was to uncover the mystery and captivating qualities of this famous classic hot dog.  What makes it so delicious that a whole festival would be held for three days featuring it as the star?

What is the Chicago Style Hot Dog?  Our close encounter with this famous culinary specialty revealed a puffy soft S. Rosen hot dog bun, its outside peppered with tiny poppyseeds with a creamy pillow soft inside, welcomed the juicy boiled beef Vienna hot dog.

True Chicagoans order their dogs “dragged through the garden,” which really means topped with seven condiments, creating a special flavor blend, unlike any other combination.  Mild yellow mustard, fresh onions, juicy tomato wedges, neon green Chicago relish, Kosher dill pickle spears, hot pickled sport peppers, and sprinkles of celery salt.

What did we find out?  Yes, the ingredients dance together forming the most delicious blend of flavors. So, what did we do? We created lots of new recipes for you to try in a Chicago style, which means they are super delicious.

Rich Bowen Interview

Rich Bowen shares his knowledge of the Chicago Hot Dog history as it expand from the 1893 Columbian Exposition into the Maxwell Street market, all across the city upon the efforts of many pushcart vendors and finally into over 3,000 brick and mortar structures.  Many of these independent hot dog vendors/families have been in business for over 75 years selling zillions of hot dogs to different ethnic groups as the city matured into today’s marketplace.  The hot dog is just as popular as ever and Chicago Classic has maintained a uniqueness that is Chicago as demonstrated by large attendance at the Chicago Hot Dog Fest.
