Sandwiches have a secret! They always are available to eat while we are doing other things like walking, riding, or even working. That’s because they are easy to eat, quick to make, and deliciously munchable.

Under or over bread slices, buns, tortillas, and even cookies, sandwiches are our best food friends. Biting into a super tasting sandwich usually introduces you to a crusty outside, blending into that soft, full-of-flavor filling. A true joy of life!

As we journeyed through our sandwich discoveries, we enjoyed so many new and exciting sandwiches. This encouraged us to share some new adventurous sandwich recipes with all of you.

Just to entice you, take a look at the vegetable “meatballs,” caramelized carrots; egg drizzling smoked salmon, Thai hot dogs, and Mexican chocolate sandwich cookies. Enjoy a sandwich adventure!

Meet David Smith, an Artisan Baker and Owner of Smittybread

Discover why Artisan breads are so popular and make great sandwiches.

Dave Smith’s second career as a bread maker started small, as a hobby. He’d bring loaves he was experimenting with to the Lafayette Journal & Courier offices, where he worked as an editor and reporter for 33 years.

After selling home baked items at the West Lafayette Famers Market for 2 years, David Smith decided to open a commercial bakery in 2017 near downtown Lafayette.

Smith used the name Smittybread when he started selling sourdough loaves and croissants at the West Lafayette and Purdue farmers markets. His father, Howard “Smiling Smitty” Smith was well known in the Lafayette area for his grocery store. It brought back memories for people that are still around Lafayette and West Lafayette from those days.”

Artisan breads have perfectly golden, chewy crusts with airy interiors that are something special. Baked from scratch, Smith uses old-world methods, natural fermentation, and time-honored techniques.

Many customers visit the bakery and tell them how happy they are to come inside, smell the fresh bread, and view the arrays of delectable pastries. The bakery specializes in authentic sourdough breads, croissant pastries and other baking items that bring quality, variety, and a taste of old-world baking to Lafayette and surrounding communities.
