Should You Use Your Lap Top for School Lectures or Business Meetings?

Laptops distract from learning, both for users and for those around them Experiments at Princeton University and the University of California, Los Angeles indicate as measured by a standardized test, those who used laptops had substantially worse understanding of the lecture. It appears that writing by hand stimulates the processing and condensing of the spoken material.

Don’t Eat Raw Flour or Raw Products Made from Flour?

Tasting uncooked foods made with flour can make you dangerously ill, according to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. People are advised to wash their hands in hot, soapy water after handling flour, such as after dusting a rolling pin or dredging fish fillets. As for the final product: high, sustained cooking heat will kill pathogens. Also don’t eat uncooked cookie dough.

Do You Ruminate Over Things That Cause You to Worry or Be Fearful?
New research shows what’s going on in the brain when those unwanted thoughts occur, and why some brains are better at controlling them than others. The results showed that concentrations of the neurotransmitter GABA in the hippocampus, a brain area central to memory, made all the difference as to whether someone was able to manage the unwanted thought from materializing.

Did You Know That Space Travel Can Change Your Brain?

In a NASA-funded study published earlier this month in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina, University Hospital Frankfurt in Germany, and Shihezi University in China found clear signs that floating in microgravity literally changes the shape of the human brain. For years, NASA has been trying to understand why some astronauts report altered vision or increased pressure in their heads while in orbit.

Do You Think That Bumble Bees Are Smart?

A new study shows that the insects can innovate to solve complex problems, quickly figuring out a better way to get a sugar reward. Such mental flexibility may help bees overcome human-caused changes to their environment. Bumble bees have already proven themselves remarkable animals. They possess complex navigational skills, rudimentary culture, emotions, and even use tools.
